Market Bulletin: OLED Crosses 10% of Laptop Panels — Shipments Rise to 4.9 Million While One Supplier Holds Over 70%

Laptop OLED shipments are expected to reach 4.9 million units in Q3 2026, more than double a year earlier, with OLED crossing 10% of laptop panels. One supplier holds over 70% — VLSI explains the concentration risk.

Market Bulletin: OLED Crosses 10% of Laptop Panels — Shipments Rise to 4.9 Million While One Supplier Holds Over 70%

OLED has stopped being a premium laptop option and started becoming a volume panel. Laptop OLED panel shipments more than doubled from 2.1 million units in Q1 2025 to 4.3 million in Q2 2026 and are expected to reach 4.9 million in Q3 2026, lifting OLED above 10% of all laptop panels in the second half of 2026 (Sigmaintell, October 15, 2026). The growth comes with a concentration problem: Samsung Display supplies more than 70% of the OLED panels used by major laptop brands, so PC makers are now qualifying Chinese suppliers as a second source — the same pattern that reshaped the smartphone OLED market.

Key Highlights

  • 4.9 million in one quarter: laptop OLED shipments rose from 2.1 million units in Q1 2025 to 4.3 million in Q2 2026, with 4.9 million expected in Q3 2026 — and OLED's share of laptop panels is projected to exceed 10% in H2 2026 (The Elec, Oct 16, 2026).
  • Over 70% from one supplier: Samsung Display supplies more than 70% of major laptop brands' OLED panels; Acer sources about 75% from Samsung Display, and Lenovo, HP and Asus rely on it as their main supplier (OLED-Info, Oct 16, 2026).
  • Monitors are the next leg: OLED monitor panel shipments are forecast at 5.17 million units in 2026, 7.43 million in 2027 (up 44%) and 16.73 million in 2030 — 3.2 times the 2026 level, split entirely between Samsung Display (3.74 million in 2026) and LG Display (1.43 million) in the forecast (UBI Research, Sep 17, 2026).
  • Phones show the other side of concentration: smartphone and foldable OLED shipments totaled 194.85 million units in Q3 2026, down 5.6% from Q2; Samsung Display rose 7.8% to 91.35 million (46.9% share) and LG Display rose 51.1% to 23.05 million (11.8%), while Chinese makers fell 24.4% to 80.45 million (41.3%) (UBI Research, Oct 12, 2026).
  • A long runway in the mix: the share of amorphous-silicon LCD in laptop panels is forecast to fall from about 79% in 2024 to about 48% in 2030, while OLED rises to about 20% and oxide LCD to about 29% over the same period (Sigmaintell via The Elec).

Market Update

The laptop shift is driven by specification, not novelty. OLED gives laptop makers thinner lids, higher contrast and faster response without a backlight unit, and the cost gap has narrowed enough for the panel to move from flagship creator models into mainstream lineups. Lenovo, HP and Asus are each expected to equip more than 10% of their laptops with OLED in 2026. That adoption is what turns a display upgrade into a supply-chain question: when a panel type crosses 10% of a category, procurement can no longer treat it as a niche line item.

The monitor market shows where laptop OLED can go if prices keep falling. Samsung Display said its cumulative QD-OLED monitor panel shipments passed 5 million units in March 2026 — the first million took until May 2024, and the next 4 million shipped in less than two years (Samsung Display announcement via VideoCardz, Apr 9, 2026). In phones, by contrast, Q3 was an adjustment quarter: total smartphone and foldable OLED shipments fell 5.6% quarter over quarter, Chinese makers adjusted down after a strong first half, and Korean suppliers regained the lead on new Apple and Samsung Electronics volumes. The contrast matters — IT panels are in a structural adoption phase, while phone panels are in a share-and-inventory phase.

VLSI's View

Concentration is the price of being early. Samsung Display holds over 70% of major-brand laptop OLED because it scaled rigid and hybrid OLED for IT while rivals focused on phone panels. That lead is a yield and qualification lead, not just a capacity lead: laptop panels are larger, live longer in a product, and are specified per model, so a second source cannot be switched on with a purchase order alone.

Second sourcing will change prices before it changes shares. BOE started mass production at its B16 line in Q2 2026, Visionox started flexible OLED for laptops in Q3, and TCL CSOT began shipping inkjet-printed monitor panels in Q3 with laptop mass production planned for Q4. Even small qualified volumes give Lenovo, HP and Asus negotiating leverage — the first effect is on Samsung Display's pricing power, not on its shipment share.

For Korea, IT OLED is a second display franchise. In the monitor forecast, Samsung Display and LG Display together account for the entire 5.17 million units in 2026 and the entire 16.73 million in 2030. Korea lost the LCD volume war to scale; in OLED for IT, the contest is about tandem structures, oxide backplanes and burn-in management — process know-how that compounds, much like yield learning in foundry.

Chase's Take: In chip work, a block that crosses 10% of area stops being an optimisation and becomes a floorplan constraint. OLED in laptops has crossed the same line. PC makers are no longer asking whether to use OLED; they are asking how to source it without a single point of failure. That is a healthier problem than the one LCD makers face — but it is still a problem, and the suppliers who help solve it will take the next leg of growth.

Outlook

  • Q4 laptop qualifications: whether BOE, Visionox and TCL CSOT volumes move from samples to shipped laptops in Q4 2026 decides how fast second sourcing becomes real.
  • 8.6-generation lines: larger substrates cut the cost of 14- to 16-inch panels; ramp timing and yield on new IT OLED lines set the 2027 price curve.
  • Monitor follow-through: if 2027 monitor shipments track the 7.43 million forecast (up 44%), IT OLED demand stays tight even if phone OLED stays soft.
  • Phone rebound check: Q4 smartphone OLED depends on iPhone Pro volumes and Chinese makers' inventory recovery after a 24.4% Q3 drop.

FAQ

How many OLED panels will laptops use in 2026? Laptop OLED shipments were 4.3 million units in Q2 2026 and are expected to reach 4.9 million in Q3 2026, up from 2.1 million in Q1 2025, with OLED exceeding 10% of laptop panels in H2 2026 (Sigmaintell, October 2026).

Who supplies OLED panels for laptops? Samsung Display supplies more than 70% of the OLED panels used by major laptop brands, including about 75% of Acer's volume. Lenovo, HP and Asus are adding BOE and EverDisplay as additional suppliers (Sigmaintell, October 2026).

How big will the OLED monitor market become? OLED monitor panel shipments are forecast at 5.17 million units in 2026, 7.43 million in 2027 and 16.73 million in 2030, split between Samsung Display and LG Display in the forecast (UBI Research, September 2026).

Why are PC makers adding Chinese OLED suppliers? Concentration in one supplier raises volume and price risk as OLED adoption grows. Chinese makers are expanding flexible and inkjet-printed OLED for IT, giving brands a second source and stronger price negotiation (The Elec, October 2026).
