Executive Summary

01 Qualcomm and AWS tie AI chip collaboration to a stock warrant

TL;DR Qualcomm and Amazon announced a multigeneration collaboration on custom AI inference silicon and optical connectivity. A September 8 SEC filing says Amazon received a September 3 warrant for up to 25 million shares at $161.26 per share, vesting against commercial and purchasing milestones tied to up to $60 billion in payments. That connects Amazon’s purchasing expansion with potential Qualcomm share dilution; it does not make the entire $60 billion guaranteed revenue.

TL;DR Samsung expanded its ASML partnership and said it plans to introduce High NA EUV into high-volume DRAM manufacturing by 2028. It will also join the industry effort to develop larger 12-inch photomasks. The aim is more efficient patterning at smaller dimensions, but this is an adoption plan, not a demonstrated cost reduction or production-yield figure.

TL;DR Arm unveiled Neoverse CSS N4, a compute subsystem for customers designing their own server silicon. It supports up to 128 cores per die, LPDDR6 and PCIe 7; this customizable design foundation is distinct from Arm’s production-ready AGI CPU. As AI agents call tools and move data, CPU, memory and I/O design around the accelerator deserves closer attention.

TL;DR Firmus announced a multiyear partnership for OpenAI to contract dedicated compute at two AI factory sites in Malaysia. The headline figure of more than 900MW covers Firmus’s entire contracted customer portfolio, not OpenAI’s allocation. With NVIDIA Vera Rubin infrastructure planned, power, cooling and actual commissioning dates matter alongside chip demand.

TL;DR Intel Foundry and ASML outlined progress using High NA EUV with current 6-inch masks while preparing for a transition to 6×12-inch masks. Near-term work includes stitching, which joins smaller exposure fields for manufacturing. This transition reaches beyond installing a scanner: masks, design tools and materials must also be ready.

06 Canaan revenue falls 68%: not every compute market runs hot

TL;DR Mining equipment maker Canaan reported second-quarter revenue of $31.9 million, down about 68% from $100.2 million a year earlier. The company cited weaker mining economics and seasonal power constraints; mining revenue of $17.7 million exceeded product revenue of $13.6 million. AI investment does not pull every market for compute silicon in the same direction.

TL;DR Quantinuum announced a finalized $100 million CHIPS R&D funding agreement with the US Department of Commerce. GlobalFoundries will be one of several manufacturing partners for next-generation ion traps and electronics using 300mm wafers, while Monarch Quantum plans to develop optical components. The funding targets reproducible manufacturing and supply chains, alongside the performance of the quantum systems themselves.

TL;DR MacRumors reported that a European Commission notice published on September 8 disclosed Apple’s acquisition of magnetic-sensor chip company Sonera earlier this year. Its sensing of weak biological magnetic fields is interesting, but no Apple Watch integration or specific product plan is confirmed. The new development is the disclosure, not a transaction completed today.

09 ASML breaks ground on a campus; capacity is not a hiring count

TL;DR ASML began building a new industrial campus in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Its first phase, expected in 2029, will house at least 3,000 employees, mainly relocating teams; the longer-term figure of 20,000 is potential workplace capacity. With module production and logistics being reorganized, the key question is whether equipment can be built more efficiently.
