Semiconductor Startup Valuation Curves: Tenstorrent Hits $6.2B, Etched Quadruples in Eight Months

Tenstorrent's $1.5B Series E values it at $6.2B. We charted nine AI chip and interconnect startups using only verified funding-round valuations: Etched up 4.2x in eight months, Groq reset, Rebellions to pre-IPO. All 24 data points published.

Semiconductor Startup Valuation Curves: Tenstorrent Hits $6.2B, Etched Quadruples in Eight Months

The 30-Second Summary

  • Tenstorrent closed a $1.5B Series E on October 19, 2026 at a $6.2B valuation. Jim Keller's company has grown roughly 6x since its ~$1B mark in 2021.
  • The steepest curve belongs to Etched: from $5B in late 2025 to $21B in August 2026 — 4.2x in eight months.
  • Not every curve goes up. Groq reset from $6.9B to $3.5B, and SambaNova fell from $5.1B to roughly $2.24B before coming back at $11B.
  • Korea's Rebellions climbed from $658M (January 2024) to $2.34B (March 2026, pre-IPO) and is now on an IPO track.
  • Every curve in this article connects only verified post-money valuations from priced funding rounds. No year was interpolated. The full dataset is published in the table below.

The Chart: Valuation Curves, 2020–2026

Semiconductor startup valuation curves 2020-2026. Post-money valuation at verified funding rounds, log scale.

Four things to know before reading it:

  • The y-axis is a log scale. Equal distances mean equal multiples. $1B→$2B looks the same as $10B→$20B.
  • Dashed segments mean no priced round happened in between. That is a gap, not a curve — most visibly SambaNova's 2021→2026 stretch.
  • Celestial AI ends with a diamond marker because its curve terminates at the Marvell acquisition price, not a funding round.
  • SambaNova's February 2026 point (~$2.24B) is a reported figure the company did not disclose. Every other point is a round where a valuation was announced or reported with the round.

The Steepest Curves: Etched and Positron

Etched builds Sohu, a transformer-only ASIC. It was valued at $5B in December 2025 on a $500M raise led by Stripes, then $10.3B on July 23, 2026 on a $300M Series C led by Sequoia, and just 26 days later $21B on August 18 on a $700M Series D led by Jane Street. That is 4.2x in eight months. The price ran ahead of volume shipments, so this valuation will be tested by shipping data from here.

Positron AI sells inference servers. It went from $1.06B at its February 2026 Series B ($230M) to $5B at its September 10 Series C ($875M) — 4.7x in seven months, the most compressed climb in this dataset. Its pitch is inference economics: designs built around GDDR-class memory instead of HBM.

What the two share: both compete in inference, not training, and both compete on cost structure rather than head-on peak performance against NVIDIA.

The News Hook: Tenstorrent

The news this week is Tenstorrent. On October 19, 2026 it announced a $1.5B Series E at a $6.2B valuation, with Fidelity and Bezos Expeditions joining and strategic backers Samsung and Hyundai Motor Group returning.

On the curve: roughly $1B in May 2021 (Fidelity-led Series C), roughly $2.6B in December 2024 (Series D), and now $6.2B. Less steep than Etched, but the line never breaks, and strategic investors keep re-upping round after round — a pattern no other curve here shows. The RISC-V-based Tensix chips, the Samsung foundry relationship, and Jim Keller himself are the reasons they give.

Curves That Went Down First: Groq and SambaNova

Groq is the only curve in this chart that ends lower than its peak. The LPU company rose from $2.8B in August 2024 to $6.9B in September 2025, then reset to $3.5B in an August 2026 round that followed its technology licensing and talent deal with NVIDIA. The independent company was simply repriced. A down curve is not automatically a failure — sometimes it is an exit changing shape.

SambaNova is the roller coaster. $2.5B in February 2020, then $5.1B in April 2021 on a SoftBank Vision Fund 2-led round — followed by almost five years without a priced round. Its February 2026 Series E did not disclose a valuation; reported figures put it near $2.24B, less than half the 2021 peak — a down round. Then on July 8, a $1B first close of its Series F led by General Atlantic marked it back up to $11B. It is the clearest case here of a company that survived long enough for the market to come back to it.

The Optical Trio: Lightmatter, Ayar Labs, Celestial AI

As the data center bottleneck moved from compute to connectivity, three photonic interconnect startups were repriced quickly.

  • Lightmatter (Passage photonic interconnect): $1.2B in December 2023 to $4.4B at an October 2024 Series D ($400M, led by T. Rowe Price).
  • Ayar Labs (TeraPHY optical I/O chiplets): a Series D announced as "above $1B" in December 2024, then $3.75B at a $500M Series E in March 2026.
  • Celestial AI (Photonic Fabric): $2.5B in March 2025, then the curve ends on December 2, 2025 with Marvell's $3.25B acquisition ($1B cash + $2.25B stock, up to $5.5B with milestones). The exit is the end of the curve.

Where Korea Stands: Rebellions and FuriosaAI

Rebellions runs from $658M at its January 2024 Series B ($124M, including strategic investment from KT), to $1.4B at a September 2025 Series C ($250M), to $2.34B at a $400M pre-IPO round on March 30, 2026. It is the only Korean AI chip startup whose curve reaches the pre-IPO stage. Placed next to the global curves, though, its absolute size is about one-ninth of Etched's.

FuriosaAI has only one verified valuation point, so it is excluded from the curves and listed in the table only: a bridge round reported at roughly $735M in July 2025, and the known event of rejecting Meta's roughly $800M acquisition offer in March 2025.

Follow the Money: Who Pays, Why Now, How They Exit

Who pays. Two groups. Strategic investors price these companies directly: Samsung and Hyundai Motor Group (Tenstorrent), NVIDIA (the Groq license deal, the Enfabrica acqui-hire), Marvell (the Celestial acquisition). And large financial investors — Sequoia, Fidelity, SoftBank, BlackRock, T. Rowe Price, General Atlantic, Jane Street — are joining late rounds faster than in past semiconductor cycles.

Why now. Training is effectively locked up by NVIDIA, but inference is an open cost fight. As hyperscaler capex grows, anything that cuts cost per token earns a premium. Optical interconnect is the bottleneck after compute, so it gets its own premium. That is why so many curves bend upward in 2026.

How they exit. So far, the precedent is strategic acquisition, not IPO: Celestial to Marvell for $3.25B, Enfabrica's $900M+ acqui-hire by NVIDIA, Groq's licensing deal with NVIDIA. The closest IPO track is Rebellions, which has completed its pre-IPO round; Etched and Tenstorrent are discussed as IPO candidates at their scale. One caution: these prices run ahead of revenue. The first sign of the next reset will likely show up not in the valuations themselves, but in the gaps between rounds stretching out again.

Chase's Take

  • Read the gaps, not the heights. Shortening gaps (Etched, Positron) mean the market is actively repricing the company. A five-year gap (SambaNova) means the company died once and came back.
  • Korea's problem is not technology, it is round size. Rebellions' $400M pre-IPO is a quarter of Tenstorrent's Series E. In inference silicon, where one tape-out costs tens of millions of dollars, the size of the raise becomes the size of the roadmap.
  • The next twelve months will test the curves: Etched's first volume shipments and any Tenstorrent IPO signal. This is where the lines start getting graded on revenue.
