Semiconductor Materials Pay, Compared: 0 of 7 Companies Publish Pay by Level — Shin-Etsu JPY 8,988,000 vs SUMCO JPY 6,411,907

Zero of seven semiconductor materials companies publish pay by level. The only like-for-like pair is Japan's filing averages: Shin-Etsu JPY 8,988,000 vs SUMCO JPY 6,411,907 (+40.2%).

Semiconductor Materials Pay, Compared: 0 of 7 Companies Publish Pay by Level — Shin-Etsu JPY 8,988,000 vs SUMCO JPY 6,411,907

30-Second Summary

  • The conclusion first: of seven semiconductor materials companies, zero publish — or have publicly verifiable — total compensation by level (Entry, Mid, Senior, Staff, Principal). Salary platforms carry no level medians for any of them, so a same-rung comparison does not exist in this sector.
  • Only one pair can be compared on the same metric. On parent-only average pay from Japanese securities reports, Shin-Etsu Chemical posts JPY 8,988,000 against SUMCO's JPY 6,411,907 — a gap of JPY 2,576,093, or +40.2%.
  • Every other number uses a different metric. GlobalWafers is a Taiwan MOPS non-supervisory average of NT$1,216,000. Merck KGaA is a derived group-wide average of EUR 106,500. Entegris and Linde are US H-1B base-salary averages. Different currencies, different definitions — putting them in one ranking would fabricate a comparison.
  • SK Specialty of Korea is unlisted, so no disclosed average pay exists at all. Aggregator estimates from before its 2021 merger are stale data, not current pay.
  • The subject of this article is therefore not a ranking. It is transparency. Materials is the least visible pay segment in the semiconductor value chain.
Japan filing averages chart

Figure: Parent-only average pay from Japanese securities reports — the only like-for-like chart that can be drawn for materials companies in this series. Source: Nikkei Company Info (from securities reports), Shin-Etsu fiscal year ending March 2026, SUMCO fiscal year ending December 2025, accessed 2026-10-22.

The One Comparison That Holds: Japan's Filing Averages

Japanese listed companies disclose parent-only average annual pay in their securities reports. It covers all job types, not only engineers, and includes bonuses. Among the seven companies researched, only these two share the exact same metric.

Company Average pay (per year) Parent-only employees Average age Fiscal year end
Shin-Etsu Chemical JPY 8,988,000 4,059 40.8 March 2026
SUMCO JPY 6,411,907 5,065 42.7 December 2025

Read the gap carefully. Shin-Etsu is a diversified chemical group — PVC, silicones and synthetic quartz sit next to silicon wafers — so this average is the whole company's, not the wafer division's. SUMCO is a pure-play wafer maker, so its company average sits close to its wafer business average. The +40.2% gap therefore means "two companies with different business mixes average this far apart," not "Shin-Etsu pays 40% more for the same job." Their fiscal years also end in different months (March vs December).

This pair still matters for one simple reason: across the entire materials sector, it is the only case where two companies can be placed side by side on the same definition from the same source type.

Everything Else Is a Different Metric — Labeled, Never Ranked

The figures below are records, not a ranking. Do not sort them.

Company Verified figure Metric (label) Period
GlobalWafers (Taiwan) NT$1,216,000 MOPS non-supervisory full-time employee average 2025
Merck KGaA (Germany) EUR 106,500 Group personnel expense ÷ average headcount (derived) 2025
Entegris (US) $114,189 H-1B average reported base salary (no bonus, no stock) 2024
Linde (US) $131,832 H-1B average reported base salary (all US entities, all roles) 2024

GlobalWafers — Taiwan's standard listed-company metric, the non-supervisory full-time employee average, is NT$1,216,000 for 2025. The median was not obtained in this research. A separate parent-only financial-statement note puts average salary cost at NT$1,287 thousand for 2025 — a different definition, deliberately kept off the same bar. That note-based figure swings with employee profit-sharing: it fell from NT$1,510 thousand in 2023 to NT$1,240 thousand in 2024 without any base-pay cut.

Merck KGaA — No Electronics-segment pay disclosure exists. EUR 106,500 is personnel expense of EUR 6,671M (excluding pension expense) divided by 62,636 average employees — the whole group, Healthcare and Life Science included, up +5.0% from EUR 101,400 in 2024. Calling it "Merck Electronics pay" would be wrong. One more trap: US salary sites under the name "Merck" describe a different company, the pharmaceutical firm Merck & Co., so none of that data is used here.

Entegris — The H-1B average reported base salary was $114,189 in 2024. It is an average, not a median, and base only — no bonus, no equity — across a small sample (31 certified LCAs in 2024). The H-1B occupation mix (Industrial Engineers, Materials Engineers, Chemists) shows which roles the company sponsors, but title-level medians could not be obtained from public pages.

Linde — The H-1B average base was $131,832 in 2024, covering all US Linde entities and all occupations, not the electronics-gas business specifically. Placed next to Entegris, it still cannot support a "Linde pays more" claim: the populations are different.

What Is Not Published

The list of what could not be verified is longer than what could.

Not available Companies Why
Total comp median by level All 7 No verifiable company salary page on level-data platforms
Level mapping table (Entry to Principal) All 7 No level data exists to normalize company levels from
H-1B median by job title Entegris, Linde Only averages are public; title medians not obtained
H-1B employer aggregate Air Liquide Aggregate not obtained in this research
US electronics-unit H-1B EMD Electronics (Merck US electronics) Filings fragmented across multiple legal entities
Electronics-segment pay Merck KGaA Only group-wide figures exist
Non-supervisory median GlobalWafers Average verified; median not obtained
Current disclosed average pay SK Specialty Unlisted — the former SK Materials merged into SK Inc. in 2021 and delisted, so no filing duty
Wafer-division-only average Shin-Etsu Chemical Diversified group; no divisional average disclosed

Why Materials Is the Darkest Segment

The reasons are structural.

First, materials is B2B. With no consumer surface, fewer employees submit data to salary platforms, and platform coverage follows job-seeker traffic.

Second, materials businesses often sit inside larger groups. Merck's electronics unit and SK Specialty are reported inside a parent's filings — or, when unlisted, carry no disclosure duty at all.

Third, even where filings exist, they show an average and nothing else. Japan and Taiwan disclose company-wide averages, but no country discloses the distribution by level. The US leaves only an H-1B base-salary trace.

Design and equipment companies can be compared rung by rung. Memory companies can be compared at company level through filings. Materials companies scatter across a different metric per country. On pay transparency, materials is the darkest segment of the semiconductor value chain.

Sources and limits: Japanese figures are parent-only averages from securities reports as republished by Nikkei Company Info, with different fiscal year ends (Shin-Etsu March 2026, SUMCO December 2025). GlobalWafers is the MOPS non-supervisory average via Goodinfo. The Merck KGaA figure is derived from its 2025 Compensation Report (personnel expense divided by average headcount), is not an official pay statistic, and is group-wide. Entegris and Linde figures are MyVisaJobs H-1B average reported base salaries — averages, not medians, and not total compensation. All figures accessed 2026-10-22. Figures with different definitions were not compared with each other anywhere in this article.

Polishing your application: Once the pay data helps you pick a target company, the next step is the application itself. FAQ

Q1. Which semiconductor materials company pays the most? Public data cannot answer that. In the only like-for-like pair — Japanese filing averages — Shin-Etsu Chemical (JPY 8,988,000) is 40.2% above SUMCO (JPY 6,411,907). Every other company reports on a different currency and definition, so no ranking can be built.

Q2. Why is there no by-level (Senior, Staff) comparison like other semiconductor articles? The raw data does not exist. None of the seven materials companies has a verifiable by-level total-compensation page on salary platforms, and H-1B data publishes base-salary averages, not title medians. Filling the gap with estimates would turn a comparison into fiction.

Q3. What does Merck Electronics pay? Segment pay is not disclosed. The only verifiable figure is the Merck KGaA group-wide derived average of EUR 106,500 for 2025, which includes Healthcare and Life Science and cannot be labeled as Electronics pay.

Q4. What is SK Specialty's average pay? There is no current disclosed figure. After the former SK Materials merged into SK Inc. in 2021, the business became an unlisted subsidiary (SK Specialty) with no business-report average-pay duty. Pension-based aggregator estimates from 2021 are five years old and cannot be used as current pay.

If you work at a materials company — was there any way to check your pay level from the outside before you joined?
