A practicing semiconductor engineer's daily read on global silicon news:

TSMC's July revenue rose 44.7% YoY to NT$467.58B, while the Sony-TSMC $6.3B image-sensor fab plan and Wonik Materials' KRW92.3B 2Q26 revenue show the capacity and margin gates around wafer starts.

Chase's Take - I do not use TSMC's monthly revenue as a direct proxy for tapeout demand. From an STA/backend perspective, the lag from a design reaching timing closure to wafer starts and advanced packaging revenue matters more.

My next checks are the 3Q node revenue mix and CoWoS capacity.

1. TSMC July Revenue Hits NT$467.58B: New Foundry Monthly Record

TL;DR - July revenue of NT$467.58B, up 44.7% YoY, topped June's record and set a new monthly foundry run-rate.

2. Sony-TSMC $6.3B Image-Sensor JV Fab: 2029 Ramp

Sony-TSMC $6.3B Image-Sensor JV Fab: 2029 Ramp

TL;DR - The US$6.3bn plan to combine Sony sensor integration with TSMC process technology in one JV fab would change the design-to-wafer handoff for image sensors.

3. Wonik Materials Posts KRW92.3B in 2Q26 Revenue

Wonik Materials Posts KRW92.3B in 2Q26 Revenue

TL;DR - New capacity lifted revenue, but helium product mix, freight and one-off R&D drove operating profit down QoQ.

4. FP4 Ozaki 15.26 TFLOPS: Base-13 FP64 DGEMM

TL;DR - On RTX PRO 6000 at N=16,384, FP4 Ozaki II reached 15.26 TFLOPS end to end, 1.04x the 14.65 TFLOPS delivered by FP8.

What to Watch Next

  • TSMC 3Q node revenue mix and CoWoS capacity
Monthly revenue blends advanced-node and packaging contributions; separating them is necessary to read tapeout demand.
  • Sony-TSMC final JV agreement, process node and wafer starts
These are the gates that turn the $6.3B plan into actual capacity and a customer qualification schedule.
  • Wonik Materials 3Q revenue of KRW99.4B and operating profit of KRW18.3B
This tests whether the P4 ramp can overcome freight and helium mix and convert volume into margin.
  • FP4 Ozaki reproducibility on B300/Rubin and non-square matrices
This determines whether the edge on one GPU and N=16,384 square DGEMM generalizes to production workloads.

Frequently Asked Questions

What was TSMC's July revenue?

July revenue was NT$467.58 billion, up 44.7% year over year. It topped June's record and set a new monthly foundry run-rate.

What is the Sony-TSMC image-sensor fab plan?

The US$6.3 billion plan combines Sony sensor integration with TSMC process technology in one joint-venture fab. The ramp is planned for 2029.

What did FP4 Ozaki achieve in DGEMM?

On an RTX PRO 6000 at N=16,384, FP4 Ozaki II reached 15.26 TFLOPS end to end. That is 1.04 times the 14.65 TFLOPS delivered by FP8.
